[Syt has been cutoff by the Bearers counselplant, Julia Zepke... He has just finished a line of ambleramble (below) in which he's essentially stating that if/when the Bearers gain fullpower, the fall of society could (does) follow...

AS: I'm not ready to start yet but am trying to figure how we could get this away from monologue and potentially even do a fadetoblack to after/backstage or something. I'm assuming that Julia will give Syt more shit while the speech is still happening though too.]

last (written) section of his speech:

Syt cleared his throat, having significant difficultly trying to do the same for his mind. Reaching down, he straightened his tie with a single pull as he resumed, "No Mir

[AS:change "sirs" to future "mir" & maybe "samm" for dudes?]

, I am not an expert in neurology, I'm an expert in history.
I have seen what happens near the end of a society. I know that it is common for cultures to increase their investments in entertainments and to lose their focus on any of the more noble endeavors they've achieved. I know that towards the end, violence increases. I know that as a society extinguishes itself, what few example of the apex-of-culture that still exist are often consolidated into a few places. YET I do not find this to be evidence in favor of the Bearers, but rather the inverse.
I propose that in most cases, the increase in hedonism comes AFTER limitations have been placed on knowledge. I propose that the drive to seek out entertainments is a direct reaction by the people to the perception that they can’t be trusted with their own culture. I propose that if you enforce the idea that the public is too stupid or too violent, soon the public will agree with you and by the time they agree with you, it will be true.

  2. These are a variety of results of what we are seeing happening in this way. Back a century ago when the rural and the urban were more balanced culture had a greater deal of complexity and variety. On and around farms there were many cultural movements that began in the history of the US.

What we see now is a kind of society that operates solely on reaction and counter-reaction. For example the Luddites have set themselves in reaction to all things modern and technical.

  3. And as a result, their culture has been embedded with the knowledge necessary to sustain themselves manually. The majority of city dwellers, on the other hand, have become less and less in-touch with performing tasks-- we are losing skills as we become dependent on automated processes--"

"I think we've heard enough Mr. Candella. This counsel simply does not have the time to listen to your tirade against progress. If you feel that your point has not yet been made, I suggest that you hire a speech writer and contact us to arrange another hearing." Syt could tell Julia was supressing a smile.

"Mir counselwoman, you can't be serious. I was promised a chance to explain-"

    "That is all."

Syt stood at the podium shocked. The house lights came back up as the counsel filed out. In the back of the room cameras were being broken down. He thought he saw Evie and Viv sneaking out the backdoor.

Syt needed to sit. How could Jimenez have infiltrated the UN? What had happened to the world? He took an empty seat in the front row and sat for five minutes catching his breath. Then he realized the embarassment. He needed out of here.

'The world's gone completely blind' was the looped thought cycling through Syt's head all the way from the auditorium back to the green room. Evelyn & Vivian were waiting for him.
